Dr. Dinesh Kumar

Director, Global Energy Initiative

Dr. Dinesh Kumar is the founding member of the Global Energy Initiative. Dr. Kumar has over fifteen years experience in academic research, teaching, journalism, and non-profit management, having worked for a number of world renowned institutions, including Columbia University, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, United Nations Association of USA, and Jane’s Information Group. He has written and lectured throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia on such topics as, NGO Management and Leadership, Sustainable Energy, International Business, the United Nations, and World Affairs.

Dr. Kumar was the founding Managing Editor of World Energy Monitor and strategic analyst for Jane’s Intelligence Digest and Courcy’s Intelligence Service where he provided comprehensive strategic, political, and economic risk analysis. Dr. Kumar is also engaged in promoting economic cooperation, investment opportunities and better understandings of the American, Chinese, and Indian energy markets. He has been supporting two schools for special children in the foothills of the Himalayas in India, which he founded in 1997. Dr. Kumar holds a Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India.

Dr. Mourad Belguedj

Honorary Chairperson - Board of Directors, Global Energy Initiative
Senior Oil Adviser and Consultant, World Bank; former Minister of Transport and Tourism, Algeria

Mourad Belguedj is the Energy Sector Advisor at the World Bank Group. Dr. Belguedj has over twenty years experience in the energy industry. He served as Executive Director for Gas, LNG and LPG Exports at SONATRACH of Algeria, as well as CEO of HYPROC, the Algerian National Hydrocarbon Shipping Company and Senior Cabinet Minister in the Algerian Government before joining the World Bank in 1993 as Senior Oil and Gas Expert/Advisor.

Dr. Belguedj’s work at the World Bank includes energy sector projects and policy advice focusing on the legal and regulatory aspects of institutional reform, the reduction of gas flaring in West African countries, national gas strategic planning for Angola, Bangladesh, and Nigeria, as well as regional energy market development for projects such as the West Africa Gas Pipeline. Dr. Belguedji holds a Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. 

Mr. Majid H. Jafar

Deputy Chairperson - Board of Directors, Global Energy Initiative
CEO, Crescent Petroleum

Majid Jafar is the CEO of Crescent Petroleum, the Middle East's oldest private oil & gas company, and Vice-Chairman of the Crescent Group of companies which includes interests in port management, logistics, contracting, private equity and real estate. He is also the Managing Director of the Board of Dana Gas (PJSC), the first regional, private-sector integrated natural gas company in the Middle East, in which Crescent is the largest shareholder, His previous experience was with Shell International's Exploration & Production and Gas & Power Divisions.

In addition to his professional commitments, Majid Jafar serves on the Board of: the Carnegie Middle East Center Advisory Board, the Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED), the Global Energy Initiative (GEI), the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce (UAE), the Sharjah Expo, the Iraq Energy Institute, and the New Leaders of the International Institute of Education (IIE). He is also the Vice-Chairman of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council for Youth Unemployment, and an active member of: the Royal Institute for International Affairs (Chatham House), the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and the Young Arab Leaders organization (YAL), and an Accredited Director of the Institute of Directors (IoD Mudara) in Dubai.

Majid Jafar attended Eton College and graduated from Cambridge University (Churchill College) with Bachelor and Master's Degrees in Engineering (Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics). He also holds an MA (with Distinction) in International Studies and Diplomacy from the University of London’s School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), and an MBA (with Distinction) from the Harvard Business School. 

Dr. Carolyn Kissane

Professor, New York University
 

Dr. Carolyn Kissane is the academic director of the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS) Center for Global Affairs (CGA). Dr. Kissane joined NYU in 2005 as one of the two founding members of CGA’s full-time faculty. Dr. Kissane specializes in the politics of energy and serves as coordinator of the energy and environment concentration for the Center’s M.S. in Global Affairs. She teaches graduate-level courses that examine the Central Asian region, the geopolitics of oil, comparative energy politics, resource security, and global civil society. 

Prior to joining NYU, Dr. Kissane served as researcher and consultant throughout Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, Argentina, Japan, and Sweden for educational and non-governmental organizations, including the Soros Foundation, the United States Institute of Peace, and the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX). She has received fellowships and awards from the Carnegie Council for Ethics and International Affairs, the Fulbright Hays program, and IREX. Dr. Kissane holds a Ph.D. in comparative education and political science from Columbia University.

Dr. Andrew Yager

Member - Board of Directors, Global Energy Initiative
Former Officer in Charge, Water, Energy and Strategies, United Nations

Andrew Yager has over thirty years experience in both the public and private sectors. Recently retired as head of the Water, Energy and Strategies branch in the Division for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, Dr. Yager is now an independent Sustainable Development Consultant based in Oslo, Norway. Prior to his nine years' working at United Nations HQ in New York City, Dr. Yager managed a major Industrial Energy Efficiency Project in Nairobi, Kenya that sought to increase sustainable industrial development and to decrease carbon dioxide emissions.

Dr. Yager also served as Head of International Development at the Institute for Energy Technology in Norway, where he managed the energy and climate change portfolio before joining the United Nations. Prior to this, Dr. Yager served as Renewable Energy and Rural Electrification Advisor to the SADC Energy Sector for six years, three of which were spent residing in Luanda, Angola. Dr. Yager holds a Ph.D in Energy Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Dr. Rahavan Seetharaman

Member - Board of Directors, Global Energy Initiative
CEO, Doha Bank

Dr. R Seetharaman is the Group Chief Executive Office of Doha Bank. He has nearly thirty years of experience in the banking, information technology, and consultancy sectors. He has played a pioneering role in introducing innovative products and services and new strategic business models to the State of Qatar. Prior to joining Doha Bank in 2002, Dr. Seetharaman held executive management positions at three banks in Oman. He is a Chartered Accountant, and began his professional career at the global consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers before moving to the banking sector.

Dr. Seetharaman also holds a number of prestigious awards, most recently receiving both the Leadership and Fellow award at the 23rd World Congress on Leadership and Quality of Governance, hosted by the Institute of Directors, and the CA Global Achiever award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAI) February 2013. Other awards of note include the Golden Peacock Global Award for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in 2011 and 2012, and CEO of the year in the Middle East at the EMEA awards in 2011. Dr. Seetharaman holds a degree from the University of Madras. 

Mr. Ed Crooks

US
 Energy Editor, Financial Times 

Ed Crooks is the US Industry and Energy Editor at the Financial Times, having been appointed the New York-based position in 2010. Prior to this, Mr. Crooks was the energy editor at the Financial Times based in London. Mr. Crooks joined the FT in 1999 as the Economics Editor, and subsequently went on to become the UK News Editor. He was previously an economics correspondent for the BBC, reporting on both television and radio. 

Mr. Crooks began at the BBC as a researcher and producer working across several news programs. He was also a reporter and editor for Investors Chronicle, and an economic analyst for the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Mr. Crooks holds a degree in PPE from Oxford University. He makes regular appearances on national and international television and radio.  

Dr. Satbir Kadian

Member - Board of Directors, Global Energy Initiative
Chief Engineer, Haryana Government (India)

Dr. Satbir Kadian is the Director of Water Resources, PW (Irrigation) Department Haryana, and Engineer–in-Chief of the Haryana PW (Irrigation) Department, in Haryana, India. He joined the Government of Haryana in the Services of Engineers in 1998, and has headed the Information Technology, Design Wing and General Services Division from 1999 to 2001, as well as having been on deputation with HSPCB as Regional Officer and Headed the Regional Offices at Gurgaon, Hisar, Yamuna Nagar and Bhadurgarh from 2001 to 2006.

Since 2004, Dr. Kadian has been an Advisor at SASHART, a journal in Hindi pertaining to Energy, Environment, and Occupational Safety, and has published a number of papers on Sustainable Development and Human Resources Development. Dr. Kadian has also designed training programs related to worker safety, and co-authored books with the faculty of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. Dr. Kadian holds a Ph.D in energy, the environment, and sustainability from the IIT, Delhi.
